Christoph Gerber

Christoph Gerber ( born May 15, 1942 in Basel ) is a Swiss physicist.

He is currently at the Department of Physics, University of Basel "Director of Scientific Communication". His work contributed to the invention of the atomic force microscope and the scanning tunneling microscope. From 1966 to 2004 he worked at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. His current research interests include biochemical Cantileversensoren and various nanotechnology issues.

Gerber has written numerous scientific publications. There were him patents issued in the field of low temperature physics, as well as the scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy. He has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel and an honorary professor at the University of St. Andrews ( Scotland) and by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
