Christoph Schütz

Christoph Schütz ( born November 6, 1689 Umstadt; † January 4, 1750 in Homburg ) was a Radikalpietist and hymnal editor.

Life

After school contactor learned the cooper craft and worked in the vineyards of his parents. By aiming to radikalpietistischen ideas and the management of a private Konventikels he came increasingly into conflict with his pastor. Since contactor was not ready to recognize the orthodox teachings of the Lutheran church hierarchy, but rather the service stayed away and published in 1725 radikalpietistische writings, the dispute escalated last.

Then he moved in 1729 to Offenbach am Main, where religious separatists was granted the freedom of belief. During this time, contactor was already a well-known personality within the radical Pietism. Here he also tried in 1730 to found a Philadelphian firm. He maintained an extensive correspondence, published several radikalpietistische writings and supported co-religionists, so he sent for example, several books shipments to German Town in Pennsylvania.

In 1733 he received the post of chamber scribe at the court of Hesse- Homburg. In addition, he worked "= cleric Würtz = herbs and flowers garden = " in an extensive songbook project which he published under the title. Originally, he planned a Universal Hymns, which should contain 30,000 songs in 30 volumes; actually a compendium in five volumes published 1738-1744 in Homburg printed with five thousand songs. Although the song book has been contemporary hardly been received, it is now an important source hymnologisches work that documents the songs of the Church's tradition and the songs of separatist groups.
