Christoph von Graffenried

Christoph von Graffenried (* November 15, 1661 in Worb, † November / December 1743 ibid ) was the founder of the colony of New Bern, North Carolina and a Bernese patrician.

After studying law, history and mathematics in Leiden and Cambridge, he became in 1691 a member of the Council of the Two Hundred in Bern and worked from 1702 to 1708 as a bailiff in Yverdon. In 1710 he founded with support from the British crown colony of the New Bern, but returned to attack the Tuscarora Indians and the loss of all his assets back to Worb. In 1730 he was in the name of his Son administrator of the rule to Worb, Wikartswil and Trimstein.
