Christoph Wilhelm Mitscherlich

Christoph Wilhelm Mitscherlich ( born September 20, 1760 Weissensee ( Thuringia), † January 6, 1854 in Göttingen ) was a German classical scholar.

Life

Mitscherlich visited the boarding school and began Schulpforta of excellent education in Latin and Greek in 1779 a study of classical philology at the University of Göttingen, where he became a pupil of Professor Christian Gottlob Heyne. In 1782 he joined as a collaborator to the Pädagogium Ilfeld ( in succession of Friedrich August Wolf). In 1785 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Göttingen and employed at the university library. In 1794 he was elevated to full professor in 1806 appointed a Privy Councillor and later to the secret Judicial Council. He succeeded his former teacher Heyne, on which he wrote in 1812 a Latin font grave.

Mitscherlich greater academic writings have appeared all in the 18th century or at least emerged. His edition of Horace appeared in 1800. It is the only work to which greater importance was attached. Mitscherlich was 1816, 1823/1824, 1824, 1829/1830 and 1830 Rector of the University of Göttingen.
