Christopher Ellery

Christopher Ellery ( born November 1, 1768 in Newport, Rhode Iceland, † December 2, 1840 in Middletown, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

Christopher Ellery was a nephew of William Ellery, who sat for Rhode Iceland in the Continental Congress. After graduating from Yale College in 1787, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice as a lawyer in Newport. From 1794 and 1798 he was employed as a civil servant ( clerk ) at the Supreme Court ( Superior Court ) of Newport County.

After the resignation of U.S. Senator Christopher Ellery Ray Greene was elected to succeed him; he took office in Congress on May 6, 1801. Ellery applied in 1804 to the re-election, but was defeated James Fenner and therefore had to resign from the Senate on March 3, 1805. The following year he was appointed by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson to the Federal Commissioner ( Commissioner of Loans ) for the management of federal loans in the State of Rhode Iceland, with headquarters in Providence.
