Christopher Hampton

Christopher Hampton, CBE ( born January 26, 1946 on the Ilha do Faial, Portugal ) is a British playwright, screenwriter and director.

Life and work

In 1966 he began studying German and French at New College, Oxford. After the end of the studies Hampton was active in the theater and wrote several pieces.

In 1973 he made his debut as a screenwriter for the film A Doll's House, which is based on a Broadway production. In 1979, he worked as an author with on the film Tales from the Vienna Woods, based on the play by Odon von Horvath.

In the 1980s he was active in both television as well as cinema; This also continued at the beginning of the 90s. His screenplay for the film drama Dangerous Liaisons meant for Hampton breakthrough; In 1989 he received the Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Award for this work.

His debut as a director, he was in 1995 with the film Carrington, which he also wrote the screenplay. A year later came with The Secret Agent under his direction, a reinterpretation of the same substance of Joseph Conrad, who had already been filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1936 under the title sabotage. In the following years he then worked exclusively as a screenwriter for various movies, until 2003 he produced his third film as a director.

His screenplay for the film adaptation Atonement earned him an Oscar nomination, and he won the Satellite Award. In 1999 he was appointed by the Queen Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Christopher Hampton is married and the father of two children since 1971.
