Christopher Latham Sholes

Christopher Latham Sholes ( born February 14, 1819 Mooresburg, Pennsylvania, † February 17, 1890 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was an American printer, journalist and inventor.

Life

Born on a farm in Montour County Sholes was in Madison as a printer and later as editor of Bender's Newspaper. In this city he was one of the founders of the Republican Party of the State of Wisconsin; earlier, he had the Free Soil Party belongs. In later years he joined the Liberal Republican Party and, most recently, the greenback party. From 1848-1849 and 1856-1857 Sholes was sitting in the State Senate; 1852-1853 he was a deputy in the Wisconsin State Assembly. During the Civil War he served as postmaster in Milwaukee.

The small Teuber 's Machine Shop in Milwaukee was the cradle of the first American typewriter. Together with Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soulé constructed Sholes on July 14, 1868 his first typewriter and registered the patent. This typewriter was reasonably handy and you could write as fast as her hand. Although it was not the first typewriter in the world - this goes back to Peter Mitter Hofer ( 1866), in part - but the first, which used the now customary QWERTY keyboard layout; whose keyboard layout was invented by Sholes. The deviating from the existing conflicting strictly alphabetical arrangement keyboard layout was intended to prevent the placement of frequently occurring letters together on as remote from each other levers the frequent jamming of the type bars. Until 1872 about 30 prototypes were this model. Sholes, Glidden and Soule could not write with ten fingers.

1873 Sholes sold his typewriter to the company Remington Arms Company in New York. This company produced up to that point only arms and sewing machines and had to laboriously from Sholes to be convinced of a new product. After a modification came on 1 July 1874, the typewriter Sholes & Glidden Type as writer on the market and was produced until 1878. The business line typewriters was later sold and renamed to Remington Rand.

At the age of 71 years Christopher Latham Sholes died on 17 February 1890.
