Christopher Mayfield

Christopher John Mayfield ( born December 18, 1935 in Plymouth ) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1993 to 2002 Bishop of Manchester in the Church of England.

Mayfield was the son of Dr. Roger Mayfield and his wife Muriel Mayfield. He grew up in Worcester. He attended Sedbergh School Sedbergh in Cumbria. He studied Engineering Science (Mechanical Sciences) at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. After graduating he taught for four years Engineering in the Royal Air Force. In 1963 he was ordained a deacon; In 1964, the ordination. His priestly career began from 1963 to 1967 as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Martin's in the Bull Ring Church, Birmingham. From 1967 to 1971 he was Lecturer ( Lecturer ) at the St Martin's in the Bull Ring Church. Subsequently he was pastor from 1971 to 1980 (Vicar ) at St Mary's Church in Luton. At the same time he was pastor from 1971 to 1976 (Vicar ) of East Hyde. In 1974 he was dean Country ( Rural Dean ) from Luton. This office he held until 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he served as Archdeacon of Bedford ( Archdeacon of Bedford ). In 1985 he was ordained a bishop. From 1985 to 1993 he was known as " Bishop of Wolverhampton " suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Lichfield in the Church of England. He, as successor to Stanley Booth-Clibborn, Bishop of Manchester in the Church of England in 1993. In 2002, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Manchester was on 1 October 2002 Nigel McCulloch. After his retirement he worked since 2002 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the diocese of Worcester. Mayfield was in the Church of England to the supporters of women's ordination.

In 1962 he married his wife Caroline Roberts. The marriage produced three children, two sons and a daughter. His hobbies and leisure activities include marriage, missionary activity and evangelicalism, Walking and cricket.

Membership in the House of Lords

Mayfield was until his retirement in late September 2002, as Bishop of Manchester as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords in his capacity as Bishop of Manchester in November 1997.
