Christopher Tye

Christopher Tye (* 1525, † 1572 ) was an English organist and composer of the Renaissance.

Tye studied at Cambridge University and was here in Oxford and a Doctor of Music. Since about 1543, he was held this position at the Cathedral of Ely and had to 1561 Master of the Choristers. Among other things, he was the musical instructor of King Edward VI. and worked in London with the Chapel Royal.

Christopher Tye wrote many Latin Masses and Psalm compositions as well as English-language works for church use of the Church of England. He has also written pieces for instrumental ensembles, including the twenty-one works in the collection In Nomine.
