Christos Papoutsis

Christos Papoutsis (Greek Χρήστος Παπουτσής, born April 11, 1953 in Larissa, Greece) is a Greek economist and politician.

In 1977 he became a member of the Central Committee of PASOK and member of the executive offices and international secretary of the party.

1981-1984 he was then Special Advisor to the Government for Public Administration, then to 1994, Member of the European Parliament, there Head of the PASOK Delegation and Member of the Committees Budget, Foreign Affairs and security and defense. 1984-1989 he was Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Delegation EEC and Canada from 1987 to 1994 Deputy Leader of the SPE and its Executive Board from 1988 to 1994. From 1984 to 1994 he was a member of the Parliamentary Commission EEC -USA.

From 1995 to 1999 he was in the Santer Commission European Commissioner for Energy, Euratom, medium and small businesses and tourism.

After he was elected in April 2000 in the Greek parliament, to which he belongs since then as a deputy. His candidacy for mayor of Athens in the municipal elections in October 2002, was unsuccessful.

Of 14 April 2000 to 24 October 2001, he was Greek Minister of Mercantile Marine, from September 2010 Minister of Protection of the Citizen ( Public Safety ). On New Year's Day 2011, he talked about Greek plans for a border fence against the movement of refugees from European Turkey. On 27 February 2012 Papoutsis resigned from his ministerial office to run for the party leadership of PASOK. The candidacy was unsuccessful.

In July 2013 was announced that Greece Papoutsis is represented at the World Bank.
