Chromatic fourth

A passage duriusculus (lat. of hard / heavy gear) is a chain of (diatonic and chromatic) descending semitones. It is often used, especially in the music of the Renaissance and the Baroque, which was closely with the doctrine of affections, to express pain, suffering and grief.

A passage duriusculus can also climb up and in contrast to the descending passage duriusculus express positive emotions. See, for example, Heinrich Schütz, Small spiritual concerts, >> O sweet, O kind, O merciful Lord Jesus Christ << SWV 285

The hallway 3 large seconds ( a tritone ) is called a passus duriusculus.
