Chromium (III ) sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound of the chromium from the group of sulfides.
Production and representation
Chromium (III ) sulfide can be obtained by reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of chromium and sulfur at 1000 ° C.
Or chromium ( III) chloride or chromium ( III) oxide are recovered with hydrogen sulfide at 650 ° C.
Properties
Chromium (III ) sulfide is an odorless brown solid which is insoluble in water. It has a hexagonal crystal structure with space group P31c. This corresponds to the Nickelarsenidtyp, wherein 2/3 of minor voids present in each of the second layer. When melting the compound under this release of sulfur to chromium ( II ) sulfide decomposes, which arise in the meantime, other phases such as Cr3S4, Cr5S6 and Cr7S8. Chromium ( III ) sulfide is resistant to non-oxidizing acids but changes with oxidizing alkaline solutions to chromium ( VI) compounds to. Upon melting of alkali metal sulfides with chromium ( III ) sulfide is Thiochromate form (III).
