Chromium ( IV ) fluoride, chromium tetrafluoride, is a chemical compound of the elements chromium and fluorine, the chromium in the oxidation state IV occupies. This compound exist two forms: the α - chromium tetrafluoride ( green black solid which sublimes at 100 ° C) and β - chromium tetrafluoride ( dark purple, crystalline solid that melts at 227 ° C).
Production and representation
α - chromium tetrafluoride can be obtained at higher temperatures of the elements:
Other ways for the reaction of fluorine with chromium (III ) fluoride, or chromium (III ) chloride:
β -chromium tetrafluoride is obtained by Langzeitthermolyse chromium ( V ) fluoride:
Properties
Physical Properties
α - chromium tetrafluoride is made up of chains of trans- edge-sharing octahedra CrF6. β -chromium tetrafluoride is composed of rings of 4 cis- corner linked octahedra CrF6, which are linked via common trans -position fluorine atoms to form tubes, each CrF6 octahedra remaining two cis- free fluorine atoms.
Chemical Properties
Chrome tetrafluoride together with fluorides more anionic fluoro complexes: CrF5, which are composed of CrF6 - octahedra common fluorine atoms; CrF62, which are constructed and CrF73 - octahedral.
