Chrysoskalitissa Monastery

The convent Chrysoskalitissa (Greek Χρυσοσκαλίτισσα ) is located on the territory of the municipality Innachori on the southwest coast of Crete on a cliff that drops steeply down to the sea. It was built in the 19th century. Only a monk and a nun live in the building and keep it repaired. Since only men in the Greek Orthodox Church are allowed to hold the service, it is not uncommon that even a monk residing in the convent.

The name " Chrysoskalitissa " means " Golden podium " because according to a legend, the monastery staircase has a level of pure gold, however, can only see the one who is without sin.
