Chumphon

Province

Chumphon ( Thai ชุมพร ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ชุมพร ) in the Thai province of Chumphon. It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Chumphon Chumphon province.

Location

The Chumphon province is located in the southern region of Thailand.

Chumphon is located about seven kilometers to the east coast on the Gulf of Thailand in the upper part of the southern region of Thailand on the River Tha Tapao. Here is also the narrowest point of the Malay Peninsula, the Isthmus of Kra. The distance to the westerly Sungbei Bati in Burma is only about 40 kilometers. The distance to the capital Bangkok to the northeast is more than 460 kilometers.

In Chumphon the Buddhist heartland of Thailand enters the Muslim dominated south.

The area around Chumphon is affected by the northeast monsoon. The highest rainfall occurs during the months of June-September, December-January it can be very windy.

Economic importance and

The lush savannah landscape around Chumphon allows plantation economy: Fruit ( Mangosteen, Long Kong, rambutan and durian ), coffee, coconut ( palm oil) are the main products. Tourist Chumphon is interesting as a way station to the resort island of Ko Tao. The nearby beach is one of the most beautiful on the Gulf of Thailand.

Traffic

Chumphon can be reached from Bangkok by train, the remote bus or with the airline Solar Air. The nearest airport is Pathiu. Chumphon is accessible by minibus.

History

In 1989, the area around Chumphon by Typhoon Gay was made of virtually destroyed all the plantations. The fertility of the land helped that you could overcome this setback quickly.
