History

Although a former church building at this point is not occupied, it can be assumed, however, since this church was built on the site of a former cemetery, of which excavations testify.

The first church may have had the shape of a three-nave early Christian basilica, the tripartite division of the sacristy indicates a date of origin before the middle of the 6th century. This construction is expected during the Arab domination ( 649-965 ) have been destroyed.

Then a smaller turn dedicated to St. Lazarus Church was built at this location. This option was taken even in Constantinople Opel knowledge. So sent ( after specifying the Synaxarium of Constantinople Opel - Codex Sirmondianus 12th - 13th centuries), the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI. to find " the way " a deputation to Larnaca this place of worship. It was thereby discovered a sarcophagus whose label " the fourth day Lazarus and friend of Christ" the conclusion admitted to be the shrine of St. Lazarus. In return for the provision of (parts of? ) The bones of the saint was at this point a larger, built the present church. The bones of the sarcophagus were brought to Constantinople Opel, from where they were stolen in 1204 by the Crusaders and brought to Marseille. From there they reached the Church of St. Lazare in Autun in Burgundy, where they are venerated today. This church is therefore likely to have been built at the beginning of the 10th century and was probably subsidized by imperial agents, so that the intricate architectural design was made possible as a multi- domed church with three impressive domes. In the early years of Ottoman rule, the dome of the Orthodox Basilica and the original bell tower was destroyed when the church was converted into a mosque.

In 1589 the church was bought for 3,000 Turkish silver coins the Ottomans again, probably because of the Christian cemetery. Over the next 200 years, the church served both as orthodox and as a Catholic church.

The 1773-1782 custom built by Chatzisavvas Taliadorou precious Byzantine icons and the unique baroque wood carving of the coated with gold iconostasis from the years 1793 to 1797 have been preserved until today. Some wooden parts of the altar and marble parts of the pulpit also date back to the 17th century and were used by the Catholics. After the Ottoman period the church tower was built as a bell tower in the Latin style.

Strong damages taught a fire in 1970, making large parts of the interior have been destroyed and restored to 1974 in 1972. In this renovation, parts have been identified under the altar in a sarcophagus, which are assigned to St. Lazarus. Presumably all the relics were not brought to Constantinople Opel.
