Church of St. Vincent (Wrocław)

The St. Vincent 's Church in Wroclaw ( pl. Katedra Greckokatolicka pw Swietych Wincentego i Jakuba ) since the year 1999, the cathedral of the Eparchy of Wroclaw - Gdansk of the Greek Catholic Church. The church was built to 1234 as a Franciscan Church and St.. Jacobus consecrated. 1530, the church was the Premonstratensians as a replacement for their located on the Elbing Vincent Monastery, which had been removed, and transferred to St.. Dedicated to Vincent. After the secularization of the monastery of St. Vincent in 1810, it served as a parish church.

The church is one of the major attractions of the city. It is located on Plac Biskupa Nankiera ( to 1945 Knight 's Square) in the old town, about 500 meters northeast of the Wroclaw Town Hall.

History

The first church was built after 1234 appointed as a monastery church for by Duke Henry II " the Pious " of Prague Franciscans as ducal Foundation. After the Duke's death in 1241 was the construction by his widow, Duchess Anne of Bohemia, is completed. Duke Henry II was interred in the church choir.

On December 12, 1261 announced the Duchess Anna of Bohemia and their sons at St. Vincent 's Church which granted the city rights for the Breslauer Neustadt to Magdeburg rights.

In the 14th century the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style; the nave has since a length of 77.5 meters and a height of 23 meters. 1530, the monastery was taken over by the Premonstratensian canons, whose original monastery on the Elbing before the city wall had been demolished ( there since 1180/93 ) for military reasons. In the years 1662-1674 the church was given a Baroque interior, including the high altar, which was created in 1667 by Franz Zeller and George Czermak.

1810, the Premonstratensian monastery was abolished. Subsequently, the church served as a Roman Catholic parish church.

At the end of the Second World War, the church was badly damaged. Then it was taken over by the Polish government, which is trying to create a museum. The reconstruction lasted until 1991. 1997 the Church by Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop Henryk Roman Breslauer Gulbinowicz was handed over to the Greek Catholic Church. In the years 1997-2010 an extensive restoration took place.

Hochberg Chapel

The Hochberg'sche Chapel ( Kaplica high Berga ) was formed by remodeling the Lady Chapel from the beginning of the 14th century. 1723-1727 prompted the Prämonstratenserabt Ferdinand von Hochberg construction of a baroque mausoleum, which was to serve as his grave lay. The chapel is one of the masterpieces of the Wroclaw Baroque. The design is by Christoph Hackner. On the artistic design, a native of Bamberg sculptor Johann Albrecht win joke, the Bohemian Johann Georg Urbansky, the mason Johann Adam Karinger and the Italian plasterer Ignaz Albrecht Provisore were involved, among other things. In the chancel there is a Pietà from the 15th century.

Although the high mountain chapel was also destroyed in the Second World War, the faithful restoration began in 2010.
