Churchill Cup

The Churchill Cup ( from sponsorship reasons also called Barclays Churchill Cup) is held annually rugby union tournament of men 's and women's national teams from England, Canada and the USA will be held. In addition, three other teams are invited. Named the tournament after former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The tournament was first held in 2003; Participants were Canada, the U.S. and the reserve team of England. The World Federation International Rugby Board wanted to zoom bring this tournament, the North American teams closer to the top. Because of the large performance gap take on the English side to the reserves designated as England Saxons since 2006 in part. For women, however, the actual national team is involved.

2004 New Zealand was invited by the team representing New Zealand Māori in the men's and the New Zealand women's national team, the Black Ferns. 2005 Argentina sent his reserve team to the men's tournament. Originally, the New Zealand Māori were provided, but they had to cancel because of conflicting schedules ( match against the British and Irish Lions ). 2005 and 2006, no women's tournament was held, as the Canadians prepared as hosts of the 2006 World Cup.

Since 2006 each take six teams participate ( previously four). South Africa and Wales had shown interest, but eventually sent Ireland and Scotland their reserve teams. The New Zealand Māori were again involved, before they were replaced in 2008 by the reserve team of Argentina. After the tournament so far took place every time in Canada, in 2007, England was the first time hosts. 2008, several games were played in the United States. Georgia took in the 2009 edition for the first time at the Churchill Cup in part, the team replaced the reserve of Scotland.
