Ciarán Cannon

Ciarán Cannon ( born September 19, 1965) is an Irish politician. Since 2011 he has been a deputy in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

Life

Cannon was elected in June 2004 in the Galway County Council. In 2007, he ran unsuccessfully for the Progressive Democrats for a seat in the 30th Dáil Éireann. On 3 August 2007 Cannon was nominated by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern to Seanad Éireann senator in 23 and that, besides Fiona O'Malley one of the two senators of the Progressive Democrats.

On 17 April 2008 Cannon was elected with 51% of votes the chairman of the Progressive Democrats. After the dissolution of the party, it was decided due to poor election results on November 8, 2008 Cannon came on 24 March 2009 back from the post and joined the Fine Gael. In the elections of 31 February 2011 Dáil Éireann Cannon was chosen for his new party. As a consequence, he resigned his seat as a senator. In early March of Taoiseach Brian Cowen of Fianna Fáil politician and former Member Darragh O'Brien was nominated for Senator instead now.

Cannon is married and operates with his wife, a pub in Carrabane in County Galway.
