Cidade Negra

Cidade Negra is a Brazilian musical group from Rio de Janeiro.

The group is the most successful Dub Band Brazil. Already their first album was a success and they got a contract with Sony. The second plate was a flop - the reason is the theming of the rights of the black population was considered. Sony demanded concessions to the market, which led to a falling out with singer Sebastião Francisco Bernardo, who left the band in 1994. The new singer Toni Garrido was seen as less charismatic, the texts were less clear, but increased the success of Cidade Negra. The video for the next single reached number two on the MTV charts in Brazil and the following album sold together more often than the previous one. On the plate Hits & Dubs famous musicians such as Mad Professor, Aswad, Lee Perry, Sly & Robbie and U-Roy mixed their greatest hits.

Singer Toni Garrido in 1999 played in the Orfeu Orfeu Negro Carlos Diegues remake of.
