CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model

The CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model provides the extensible ontology for terms and information in the field of cultural heritage. It is a standard (ISO 21127:2006 ) for the controlled exchange of information in the field of cultural heritage and should be applied, among others, archives, libraries and museums to improve the availability of knowledge.

It is the goal of the CIDOC CRM to capture the wealth of information in the field of cultural heritage in common and to provide a general framework to its formal semantics to enable any information of this range may be associated with the concepts of the CIDOC CRM. In this way, important prerequisites for integrating information to be created, since tools may be developed to the schema transformation and integration based on the CIDOC CRM. History

The CIDOC CRM emerged from the work of the Group on Documentation Standards forth in the International Committee for Documentation of the International Association of Museums CIDOC. Until 1994, it was working on a object - relational model for information in the field of museums. Since 1996, the object orientation became the basis for the development that led to the submission of the first " CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model ( CRM) " 1999. In 2000, the process began to establish as an international standard (ISO).
