Cilice

A cilice is a multi-unit chain, one side of which is studded with sharp metal parts. It is placed around the bare thigh and caused great pain especially when sitting. The cilice served in the Middle Ages next to the hair shirt as Kasteiungsinstrument. Even today, wearing some of the members of the Catholic lay organization Opus Dei cilice.
