Cilla Black

Cilla Black OBE ( born May 27, 1943 in Liverpool; actually Priscilla Maria Veronica White ) is a British singer and television presenter. She was one of the stars of the Liverpool Merseybeat scene.

Life

As a child, her vocal talent was noticed and encouraged by her family. In the early 1960s she got a job at the Cavern Club, where the Beatles appeared regularly. She knew how to draw attention to their talent. With the Beatles, they became close friends.

On the recommendation of John Lennon took Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles, they 1963 under contract. George Martin produced their first recording Love of the Loved, a piece that Lennon and McCartney had written. The single reached number 35 of the British music charts.

The second single was Anyone Who Had a Heart, a composition by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, who had previously been a U.S. hit for Dionne Warwick. The record shot to number one on the charts and became the best selling single of a female artist in the UK. In Germany it was their only single that could be placed in the charts. There followed a number of hits, including a second number one in 1964, You're My World, and nine other top 10 singles. Among the most famous recordings of Cilla Black belong except the number - one hits and Alfie and Step Inside Love.

In 1964 she starred with in the film Ferry Cross the Mersey by Gerry & the Pacemakers. After Epstein's death in 1967, began Cilla Blacks star in the music business to decline. In 1971 she had her last Top 10 hit with Something Tells Me.

At that time she began a successful second career in television. In 1968, she got her own television series whose title song Step Inside Love by Paul McCartney was written. In the seventies, Cilla Black was one of the most popular presenters in the UK.

1993 Cilla Black celebrated a modest comeback in the charts, including a duet with Dusty Springfield. In the same year she was awarded the Order of the British Empire.

Reception

Anni-Frid Lyngstad 1969 coverte ( later a member of ABBA) the piece Surround Yourself with Sorrow under the title Försök och sov på saken. Agnetha Fältskog released in 2004 ( formerly a member of ABBA), the single If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind, an interpretation of a Cilla Black- songs, and reached number 11 in the British charts.
