Cimabue

Cimabue ( * ca 1240; † ca 1302; Cenni di Pepo real name ) was a Florentine painter and mosaic artist, who came in as a discoverer and champion of Giotto in the history of art.

As one of the first of the early Renaissance to the formalism of Byzantine art breaking, he tried his hand at a more vivid image of people and objects.

Giorgio Vasari wrote in his Le vite the first biography of the painter.
