Cinepak

The Cinepak Codec by Radius is a relatively old codec that was originally developed for playing smaller videos of the then very slow computers. An AVI or QuickTime file using the Cinepak codec could then be decompressed already in real-time even from CD drives with single speed, compression, however, requires a relatively long time, even on current computers, and therefore for video editing not recommended.

Whereas in the past the compression ratios amazing stand today with Xvid and other MPEG- based codecs look far better compressed paths. For this reason, Cinepak Indeo is next only still used today when a codec is needed to further dissemination, as Cinepak is included, for example with Windows.

All animations in Cyan's Myst and Riven were encoded with Cinepak, so that the numerous full-screen sequences could be played directly from the CD on even then slower computers.
