History

As Circleville was founded in 1810, were located at the site several prehistoric remains from the Hopewell culture, including a square and a circular rampart. The circular rampart surrounded by two concentric earthen walls, each about 6 m high. Between the walls, a deep ditch was located. Place a square of the rampart was enclosed to another wall of 3 m in height surrounded. Eight breakthroughs in this innermost wall leading to the square.

Although the prehistoric plant 1810 was only partially preserved, it served as the floor plan of the city: it has been applied to a circular public square. In the center stands the courthouse was built with an octagonal floor plan. Two roads formed concentric circles with the place as center of the circle. From the square led four roads like spokes away from the center of the city. The court house was destroyed by a fire in 1841. 1846, the circular layout of the city was rejected by the citizens, and replaced by a conventional grid pattern. Today only a few buildings are still standing, the floor plan includes circle segments. The city's name (Circle = Circle ) is derived from that for the United States rather unusual shape of the original city plan.
