Cirilo Villaverde

Cirilo Villaverde ( born October 28, 1812 in San Diego de Núñez, Cuba, † October 24, 1894 in New York City ) was a Cuban poet, journalist and freedom fighter.

Life

Since 1840 Cirilo Villaverde took part in the Cuban independence movement against the Spanish colonial power. He was secretary of Narciso López, who later in 1850 and 1851 took over from the U.S. invasion of Cuba to the liberation of Spain, but failed due to the lack of support for the Cuban people.

1848 Cirilo Villaverde was arrested by Spanish soldiers in his house. In 1849 he managed to flee to the U.S., where he brought out various exile periodicals as a publisher. In particular, the novel Cecilia Valdés is one of the most important works of the Cuban national literature.
