The Cirneco dell ' Etna is recognized by the FCI Italian breed of dog that comes from the island of Sicily (FCI Group 5, Section 7, Standard No. 199).

Origin and History

Previous studies have assumed that the Cirneco Etna descended from hunting dogs that were bred time of the Pharaohs of the Nile Valley. The Cirneco Etna had then come with the Phoenicians to Sicily. However, recent studies support a different theory: The Cirneco Etna is originally from Sicily and lived on the slopes of Mount Etna. Coins and engravings from the Roman period show that dogs of this type occurred in Sicily before the birth of Christ.

Description

The Cirneco Etna is medium in size (up to 50 cm and up to 12 kg ), built square, slim, yet tough and durable. The coat is short, very smooth and firm. Here, the fur on the fuselage and the tail is about 3 cm long. The coat color is fawn, washed out of intense until, as isabell - sand color. White or Pied copies can occur; in general, however, the Cirneco Etna has only small white markings.

The ears are strikingly large standing and typical as with the hounds.

Use

The Cirneco Etna is used for hunting wild rabbits. Its circulation area covers mainly the region around Mount Etna, on whose slopes he ferrets out the rabbits in the bushes and boulders. He drives the rabbit out of hiding, so that the hunter can get to the shot.

For dogs who want to win the Italian beauty Championships, taking part in a hunt test is mandatory. Since 2001, the hunting test is also prescribed for the attainment of beauty Championships for the FCI.
