Cisterna chyli

The cisterna chyli (from cisterna " cistern " chyle " lymph " ) or lumbar cistern is a collection space for lymph towards the abdomen of the first two lumbar vertebrae. In these thin-walled cistern the lymphatic vessels of the abdomen, pelvis and leg lead ( hind limb ). The lumbar cistern is part of the lymphatic system.

Inflows to the lumbar cistern are:

  • Lumbar trunk ( " lumbar strain" ): pairs, forwards the lymph of the pelvis and lower (rear ) limb
  • Intestinal trunk, in the trunk visceral animal anatomy ( " visceral trunk" ): unpaired, collects lymph from the liver, stomach, spleen and intestines

The Association of Eingeweidelymphbahnen the trunk visceral does not occur in all species. In the horse pull with celiac artery (liver, stomach, spleen ) and intestinal trunk ( intestine) two tributaries from the viscera to the lumbar cistern.

The only outlet of the cisterna chyli, the thoracic duct ( thoracic duct ), which eventually empties into the left venous angle in the upper mediastinum between the subclavian vein and internal jugular vein.
