Cisterna di Latina

Cisterna di Latina is a town in the province of Latina in the Lazio region with 35 952 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Cisterna di Latina is located 49 km southeast of Rome and 17 km northwest of Latina. It is located in the foothills of the Alban Hills on the edge of the Pontine plain. Its districts are Borgo Flora, Le Castella, Doganella di Ninfa, Isola Bella and Olmobello.

The nearby towns are Aprilia, Artena (RM ), Cori, Latina, Norma, Sermoneta and Velletri (RM ).

Traffic

Located on the Strada Statale Cisterna 7 Via Appia (SS 7 ), the main access road of the Pontine plain.

It also has a station on the railway line Roma - Formia -Naples, which is located in the town center. The station is also served by the regional train FR7 Rome - Formia.

History

In ancient times, was just southeast of the present town on the Appian road station Tres Tabernae, which became the city and was a bishopric. 868 Tres Tabernae was destroyed by the Saracens and abandoned thereafter. The bishop's seat was moved to Velletri. The fact that Tres Tabernae was not rebuilt hung safely and with the progressive silting up of the Pontine plain together since late antiquity.

Inhabitants of Tres Tabernae founded a new settlement on a hill called Terra di Cisterna, named after a cistern from the time of Emperor Nero. Since the Via Appia was, however, very little used, the place remained insignificant.

The draining of the Pontine Marshes in 1929 was coordinated by Cisterna from. Thus, the upswing of the town, which belonged to the province as Cisterna di Littoria Littoria since 1934 began.

After the Allied landing at Anzio on January 22, 1944, it came from January 29 to battle for Cisterna, in which the German Wehrmacht was able to repel the advance of the Americans. Cisterna was held by the Germans until April, but after that was almost completely destroyed.

From the 1950s, the reconstruction began with the application of new districts. The settlement of international companies such as Goodyear and Unilever led to a rapid recovery.

Antonello Merolla ( PdL ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 19 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council. He solved Mauro Carturan from (since 2004), the 2007 his party, the UDC, left and was not re-erected as a candidate.

Attractions

  • The Palazzo Caetani was built from 1560 to 1574. After heavy destructions 1944 he was reconstructed. Under the palace cistern dating from the 1st century is obtained, which gave the town its name.
