City of Basel Music Academy

The Music Academy of Basel is a four institutes Music Academy, which is part of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland since 2008. It is located in the city of Basel suburbs quarter.

At the beginning of the MAB was the foundation of the Music School on February 8, 1867 on the initiative of the Basel orphans father Johann Jakob Schäublin -Vögtlin and society for the good and profit of Basel.

The first director was Selmar Bagge in the years 1868 to 1896, after the composer Hans Huber led the General Music School 1896-1918 artistic, and administrative leadership was Heinrich Zickendraht. Hans Huber also founded in 1905 as the Academy of Music Conservatory, the first of its kind in the German-speaking Switzerland.

In 1954, the Schola Cantorum, founded in 1933 by Paul Sacher was combined with the Music School and the Academy of Music. All three institutions together formed since the Music Academy of Basel. In 2001, the musical foundation courses were introduced as the fourth institute. Since 2008, a part of the Music Academy of Basel for Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.
