City of Men ( Cidade dos Homens ) is a Brazilian television series about life in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. With City of Men director Fernando Meirelles linked to his film City of God, with which he became internationally known in 2002. Meirelles is also a producer with Brazilian TV station Rede Globo. Much like City of God, City of Men is staffed with mostly young amateur actors from the slums.

Action

The focus of the series are Acerola ( Douglas Silva; performer of curls in City of God ) and Laranjinha ( Darlan Cunha ). While they are about 13 years old in the first season, they are about 17 in the fourth and so far last season at the beginning of adult life. This acerola and Laranjinha live through many twists and turns, from contact to the usual gang violence in the favelas about wild parties, carefree summer, annoying and unwanted jobs Vaterfreuden almost all facets of life in an extremely short period of time.

Broadcast

In Brazil, the series had an exceptional success. Around 35 million viewers provide an absolute record in the Brazilian television dar.

The Swiss Television broadcasts since March 31, 2008 from the series bilingual SF zwei. On German television, there have been to see any of the 19 episodes. Meanwhile, the first three seasons are available on DVD. The release date of the fourth and final season is not fixed yet.

Since 2 March 2009, the first season of the series is in German language part of the free offer of ad-supported video provider Joost (software). Inszwischen the 10 episodes of the second and third season, there are available.

Cinema version

2007 was a movie based on the series City of Men. It bears the same title, and Douglas Silva plays in the theatrical version, the main role. Director of the film is Paulo Morelli. In Germany he was first seen at the 2008 Berlinale in the Generation section 14plus.
