City of Sunderland

The City of Sunderland is a metropolitan borough with the status of a city in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear in England. Administrative center is the city of Sunderland. Other important towns in the Borough are Bishop Wearmouth, Doxford Park, Farringdon, Fulwell, Grindon, Hetton -le- Hole, Houghton- le-Spring, Redhouse, Roker, Ryhope, Seaburn, Southwick, Thorney Close and Washington.

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough Tyne and Waer. Were fused while the Sunderland County Borough and Urban District Hetton, Houghton- le-Spring and Washington. These authorities previously belonged to County Durham.

1986 Sunderland was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the superordinate management of ane Tyne Wear. Sunderland remained as firefighters and public transport part of Tyne and Wear for ceremonial purposes and also for individual higher-level tasks

In 1992, the Borough on the 40th Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II the status of a City. Ten years later, the request to be allowed to appoint a Lord Mayor was, however, rejected.

  • On a 136 m high hill between Washington and Houghton- le-Spring is the Penshaw Monument, one from 1844 was commissioned by Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry nachgebauter Greek temple ( along the lines of Hephaestus Temple in Athens, but in the half scale ). Its official name is The Earl of Durham 's Monument, named after the former owner, in 1939 the National Trust left it.
