CityEL

The CityEL is a three-wheeled light vehicle with an electric drive for one person, that can be driven in the summer as a convertible.

The CityEL is approved as a car for the road ( or 57-km/h- 63-km/h-Version ), but may be permitted in speed reduced form as a light motor vehicle and then moved an insurance plate ( 45-km/h-Version ).

Current manufacturers of CityEL is the company Citycom.

Technology

The CityEL is equipped with a pancake motor Perm PMG -132 ( top speed 63 km / h ). Depending on the route consumption and condition of the sealed lead-acid batteries of CityEL can achieve up to 50 km range on one battery charge. Since early 2009, a lithium -ion battery with battery management system is available, the range of approximately 100 km, enables and much lighter ( the lithium system weighs about 45 kg, the sealed lead-acid system 120 kg, the CityEL without batteries weighs about 160 kg, the total weight is 400 kg).

The energy consumption is depending on the model 3.5 to 9 kWh per 100 km. For comparison, a liter of gasoline contains 8.9 kWh. According to the consumption of a CityEL would be the equivalent of between about 0.4 and 1 liter of fuel per 100 km. The CO2 emissions of the CityEL is in operation 0 g / km (tank -to-wheel ). Taking into account CO2 emissions from electricity generation ( well-to- tank ) for the CityEL with the regular German electricity mix, the total output is about 26 g / km (Well- to-wheel analysis).

The CityEL offers a boot volume of 300 l

Vehicle concept

Background on this vehicle concept is that the largest share of all trips with only a few passengers on short routes takes place (on average about 60 km per person per day). As a light motor vehicle is already taken at CityEL both in production and in operation on low resource consumption into consideration. The electric motor is in stop-and -go traffic of the city centers more efficient than an internal combustion engine.

The chassis of the CityEL consists of a double plastic tray, is filled with a special material for the damping of any impact. The resulting 15 cm thick damping vehicle pan, the impact energy in an accident. Then the vehicle is pushed by its low weight to one side. A crash test was conducted with the CityEL, the ADAC has confirmed that the security of the CityEL with conventional small car is comparable.

The advantages of CityEL for the owner over a conventional car are:

  • Low running costs (energy, maintenance, insurance and road tax )
  • Small footprint for footprints

Compared to two-wheelers (of bicycle to motorcycle) provides the CityEL the following advantages:

  • Better grip for luggage
  • Protection against wind and weather
  • Better passive safety
  • Capsize at low speeds and locking wheels (better for smooth roadways )
  • Any safety equipment eliminates

The disadvantages compared to conventional motorcycles are:

  • Lower ground clearance (bad when parking due to high curbs etc. )
  • Significantly poorer performance (speed, acceleration, cornering)
  • Low seat height makes for poorer visibility and poorer Overview
  • Lacks the portability of a passenger

The disadvantages compared to conventional cars are:

  • Lower comfort
  • Considerably less space for passengers and baggage

As disadvantages compared to motor vehicles with internal combustion engines are:

  • Recharging of the depleted battery lasts substantially longer than a refueling with petrol or diesel fuel
  • Regular charging times for batteries and availability of a power outlet in parking nearby
  • Significantly shorter range

History

The Danish company El -Trans AS from Randers developed the car and brought it in 1987 under the brand name Mini -El on the market. Later renamed CityEL was. After the developer company had to cease production in June 1991, the company was taken over by a German investor and its headquarters were transferred into the Frankish Aub. Since the first presentation of a closed Basic version number of technical improvements were made, relating in particular to the drive and the battery and the charging system. 2012 reported the manufacturer Smiles AG filed for bankruptcy and was taken over by Ellert Rent GmbH. This continues the production and the service under the new / old name CITYCOM GmbH.
