The City Geography Markup Language ( CityGML ) is a GML application schema for the storage and exchange of virtual 3D city models. CityGML is an OGC standard since 13 August 2008.

Be modeled urban and landscape objects, especially the terrain, buildings, water and traffic areas, vegetation, street furniture and land uses. Each object can occur at different levels of detail. In addition to the geometry and appearance in particular, the semantics (meaning, subject matter ) and the topology (relationships, neighborhoods ) describes the objects. CityGML relies on standards, for example, the Open Geospatial Consortium ( OGC ) and the ISO 191xx series.

CityGML has been developed since 2002 by the Special Interest Group 3D ( SIG 3D) spatial data initiative in the North Rhine-Westphalia (GDI NRW) and now in the context of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Germany (GDI -DE). Members of the group come from the business, government and research from all over Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
