Civic Union (Latvia)

Pilsoniskā Savieniba (PS, Citizens Union) was a conservative political party in Latvia. It was founded in 2008, mostly by former members of the national-conservative TB / LNNK and the liberal conservative Jaunais laiks. On 6 August 2011, the party went on in the founding Vienotība.

History

The PS was since 2009 part of the Latvian government coalition led by Valdis Dombrovskis (JL ) and presented the Minister of Defence Imants Viesturs Liegis. Party leader was Kalniete, former Latvian Foreign Minister and Member of the European Commission.

In the European elections in Latvia in 2009, in which the PS took the first time, she won over 24 % of the vote and was victor. She won two seats in the European Parliament, who joined the Group of the European People's Party ( Christian Democrats). The PS itself was since 2010 a full member of the European People's Party ( EPP).

At the election to the Saeima on October 2, 2010, the Citizens Union adopted in the context of the electoral alliance Vienotība (unit) together with Jaunais laiks and a small party part. The Alliance won 31.2% share of the vote and 33 of the 100 deputies seats in the single-chamber parliament.
