Civitella del Tronto

Civitella del Tronto is a municipality in the province of Teramo, in the Italian region of Abruzzo. The village is located about 140 km northeast of Rome and 20 km from the Adriatic coast and has 5290 inhabitants.

The place is located in the Monti della Laga, one of the Abruzzo region above the limiting flux to the Marche region, the Tronto. Historically, it was for 600 years the border between the Kingdom of Naples and the Papal States.

Civitella is a member of the Comunità Montana della Laga.

The medieval town center is of a great fortress, which dates back mainly to the 19th century, dominates.

History

Maybe Civitella goes back to a settlement of the Piceno. Written mentioned but it is the first time in 1001. Importance was the only place in the time of the Hohenstaufen.

1556/57 besieged François de Guise on his conquest to Naples, the castle that was months defended by the inhabitants of Civitella until the French commander was recalled by his king. King Philip II granted to thank the municipal rights and the nickname Civitas Fidelissima ( most loyal city) to Civitella still bears in his coat of arms.

Also in 1806 held the fort under the command of the Irish Governor Matteo Wade of the Army Joseph Bonaparte stood, which was used by his brother Napoleon as King of Naples. Only when Naples was long since fallen capitulated Civitella. After the Bourbons were again reaches the throne of Naples, the castle was almost completely demolished in 1820 and built by the architect Stefano Ottaviani under the most modern, military point again. So the troops of Garibaldi held the new fortress 1861, when the last bastion of the Bourbons, on the way to Italian unification was seven months. Thereafter, however, the castle lost its importance as a border fortress and was left to decay. Only in 1973, she was again thoroughly restored.
