Clactonian

As Clactonian (English: Clactonian ) is called a 'Neanderthal ' flint industries ", which (in England: Hoxne Interglacial ) in time with the Holstein interglacial period is to be connected and the transition to subsequent Saale glaciation. The name was coined by the British archaeologist Hazzledine Warren, who took tens of thousands of stone tools since 1911 in gravel pits near the southern English Clacton-on -Sea ( Essex ).

Dissemination

An accumulation of Clactonian - places of discovery was first seen in gravel bodies on both sides of the English Channel today, which did not exist at that time. In Central Germany there were the gravel pits of Walldorf ( billet ), Gröbzig and Wörbzig some sites, for the " clactonoiden " from tee Industries was spoken.

Characteristics

Main characteristic of the Clactoniens is the dominance of large-sized tees and unifaziell retouched scrapers, on the other hand, the absence of bifaces and other bifaziell revised types and the lack of Levallois- basic forms. The postulated for the advance production " anvil " technique ( the core is not split with a hammerstone, but pitched on an anvil ), it is also considered research historical misinterpretation. This technical interpretation derived from the often large smooth striking surface residues of the basic forms that were provided with several shock eyes. However, there is a gray area to Geofakten caused by natural nick of coarse gravels and can have similar features.

The Clactonian is no longer considered a separate culture, but merely as a technically relatively primitive facies expression within the Acheulean. Due to the final relativization were the much older hand ax finds from southern England find site Boxgrove Quarry. Previously had alerted Nick Ashton on the simultaneity of Acheulian and Clacton- basic forms in the excavations at finding place Barnham ( Suffolk ).
