Claiborne County (Tennessee)

Claiborne County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Tazewell.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Tennessee, bordered to the north Kentucky and Virginia and has an area of 1,144 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bell County (Kentucky), Lee County ( Virginia), Hancock County, Grainger County, Union County, Campbell County and Whitley County ( Kentucky).

In the north, the Cumberland Gap connects the Claiborne County Kentucky. The county is drained by the Powell River, the southern boundary is formed by the Clinch River. Both rivers feed the Norris Lake on which also the Claiborne County has a share.

History

Claiborne County was formed on October 29, 1801 from parts of Grainger County and Hawkins County. It was named after William CC Claiborne, a governor of Louisiana and the Mississippi Territory.
