Clair Burgener

Sinclair Walter " Clair " Burgener ( born December 5, 1921 in Vernal, Utah; † September 9, 2006 in Encinitas, California ) was an American politician ( Republican).

Early years and political career in California

During the Second World War and the Korean War (1951 ) he served in the United States Army Air Corps. Then he closed in 1950 to study at the California State University.

From 1953 to 1957 he was alderman in San Diego and at the same time from 1955 to 1956 vice- mayor. 1962-1966 Burgener sat first in the California State Assembly, then then from 1967 to 1972 in the Senate of California. In the years 1960 and 1964 he represented the Republican Party in California at the Republican National Convention.

Deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives

From 3 January 1973 to January 3, 1983 Clair Burgener was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States and, representing the electoral district of San Diego. During this time he voted partly also against official party interests in order to customize the MEPs for San Diego, Lionel Van Deerlin policy in the interests of the city. In late 1982 he gave up for reelection.

Commitment for the mentally handicapped

After a mental disability had been found with his son Rod, he began to engage in mentally retarded children and was so, for example, President of the Association for retarded children of California ( 1959-1961 ) and Vice President of the National Association for retarded children ( 1961-1962 ). 1970 appointed him U.S. President Richard Nixon as vice-chairman of the Presidential Committee for the mentally retarded. This office practiced Burgener from to 1973. In addition, he was founder of the " Clair Burgener Foundation ".

Other activities

After the withdrawal from active politics Burgener was 1983 to 1988 Member of the Board of the Agency for International Broadcasting, and at the same time to 1993, President of the personnel authority of the State of California.
