Clairette Blanche

Clairette Blanche is a white grape that loves sunny locations with poor soil. Therefore, you will find these late maturing variety common in the French regions of Provence, Rhône and Languedoc. The Clairette Blanche is but also cultivated in many other countries, such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Morocco and the United States.

In the past it used Clairette Blanche mainly for the production of vermouth. Meanwhile varietal wines are made from it. The yielding variety produces spicy, high alcohol ( 12-14 volume percent alcohol content) and serves as an ingredient for simple foam and blending wine and some dessert wines and straw wines. Since the white wine oxidizes rapidly, the wine from Clairette Blanche should be drunk young. Lovers discover in wines notes of green apples, fennel and lime blossom.

It is on behalf of the three appellations Clairette de Bellegarde ( Languedoc ), Clairette de Die (Rhône ) ( here it is, however, the Muscat blanc à petits grains, which is mainly responsible for the fruity flavor) and Clairette du Languedoc (Languedoc ) contain. The term Clairette is an often used synonym for many varieties in southern France, for example, for the Bourboulenc ( Clairette Grosse), Calitor Blanc ( Clairette Egreneuse ), Trebbiano Toscano ( Clairette d' Afrique ), Ugni Blanc ( Clairette Monde) and Verdesse ( Clairette Chindrieux ).
