Clan Hamilton

The house Hamilton (English House of Hamilton), also known as Clan Hamilton, is one of the most important Scottish noble families with presumably English origins. It can be traced back to Walter FitzGilbert, called Hamilton, who has owned 1296 lands in Lanarkshire. He swore King Edward I of England and commanded loyalty in English Order 1314 Bothwell Castle, in which the English knights had fled after the battle of Bannockburn. After he had surrendered here he I. Bruce was rewarded with a knighthood and lands including in Clydesdale and West Lothian by the Scottish king Robert. His grandson, Sir David of Cadzow, was the first who took the last name Hamilton.

History

The great-grandson of David of Cadzow, James Hamilton was raised in 1445 to Baron and Lord Hamilton, the first allied with the rival noble family Douglas against the Scottish crown, but then betrayed and could benefit from their goods and lands confiscated. After the death of his first wife, he married Princess Mary, eldest daughter of King James II of Scotland, which inherited the island and the title of Earl of Arran her son. Between her grandson James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran and the Scottish throne was after the death of King James V only Mary Stuart. He was chosen as her regent and held that office until 1554th by King Henry II of France to James Duc de Chatelherault was charged. His eldest son, James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran was as a possible husband for both Mary Stuart as well as Queen Elizabeth I of England in the conversation, but was insane in 1562. He was succeeded by his brother John as Earl of Arran, this was raised in 1599 to the Marquess of Hamilton.

The 3rd Marquess of Hamilton James Hamilton led an army of 6,000 men to support the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf in 1631/32, later he played a significant role in the Auseinandersetzuntgen of King Charles I and the Covenanters. Collected in 1643 for the Duke of Hamilton, he led a Scottish army to England but was defeated by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Preston (1648 ) and then decapitated. After his brother's death, his only daughter Anne Hamilton Duchess was in its own right. Her husband, William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk took the name and title of Hamilton. Both descendants called themselves from then on Douglas - Hamilton. Their eldest son, James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton in 1711 the English Duke of Brandon, but Parliament could sit and vote, the state it thus, in the House of Lords not to.

The current Duke Alexander Douglas - Hamilton, 16th Duke of Hamilton lives in Lennoxlove House in East Lothian. The former ancestral castle built in 1695, the Hamilton and was considered one of the largest non-royal residences in Hamilton (South Lanarkshire ), fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1921. Hamilton is one of the five people in the United Kingdom, at the same time lead the two ducal title.

Irish sideline Abercorn

1603 James Hamilton, a grandson of the 2nd Earl of Arran, to the Lord and appointed in 1606 to the Earl of Abercorn. He reasoned thus a branch line, which soon moved to Ireland and is there today. 1790 the family branch of the title Marquess of Abercorn was awarded in 1868 then Duke of Abercorn.
