Clan Murray

Murray is the name of a Scottish clan in the Highlands, who played a major role in Scottish history.

History

The Murrays are descendants of Flemish nobles Freskin de Moravia (also progenitor of the Clan Sutherland and Douglas ). In the 12th century followed by some Flemish and Norman nobles of the invitation of the Scottish king to settle in Scotland. Freskin and his son was gifted with extensive lands in Moray and married into the old line of Celtic Mormaer of Moray. Then they took the name ' de Moravia ' to what is Latin for ' of Moray '.

MacMurray, Moray, Murry, Morrow, and Morogh are all variants of the surname.

Castles

  • Blair Castle was built in 1269 and is still the seat of the Chiefs of Clan Murray, Duke of Atholl. The castle is every year the venue for the spring meeting of the Atholl Highlanders in which his Grace, the Duke of Atholl, acting as patron. The Atholl Highlanders put the last private Regiment in the UK dar.
  • Balvaird Castle was built around 1500 for the Murrays of Tullibardine, Earl of Mansfield and Mansfield.
  • Bothwell Castle was until 1362 owned by the Morays of Petty until it passed by marriage to Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas passed.
  • The Murrays of Atholl had also Huntingtower Castle and were owners of Falkland Palace. John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl spent much of his life in both residences, mainly because his parents at that time still in the magnificent Dunkeld House ( which no longer exists today ) lived.
