Clarence Horton Greene

Clarence Horton Greene ( * 1894 in North Carolina, † 1961) was an American Old-time musicians. Greene's career spanned the years 1915 to 1955, in which he played fiddle and guitar, among others, with Clarence Ashley or with Byrd Moore.

Life

Greene's life is still largely in the dark. Greene grew up in North Carolina and had three brothers with whom he appeared as Greene Brothers String Band. Often Greene went about with his friend and musical partner Walter Davis, played on streets or at events. According to Davis learned both by blues musicians Blind Lemon Jefferson playing the guitar. Jefferson played for some time in Johnson City, Tennessee, where Greene and Davis were often.

Greene and Davis were among the mid- 1920s on a circle of musicians from North Carolina, which grossed plates under different names for Gennett Records and Columbia Records. To this circle belonged addition to Greene Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster, Byrd Moore, Walter Davis and Will Abernathy. In October 1928 Greene played some plates a while Frank Walker Johnson City sessions that were released by Columbia. In the following years, further recordings, including as a member of Byrd Moore's Hot Shots and as a member of the Blue Ridge Mountain Entertainers.

Greene's last recordings from February 1930 for Gennett remained unpublished. But until about 1955, he continued to go to the music. Clarence Greene died in 1961.
