Clarence ( Māori: Waiautoa " Fast Water " ) is a small town in the Marlborough region on the South Island of New Zealand. It is named after the Duke of Clarence, later William IV named.

The place is located on the Pacific coast at State Highway 1, 80 km south-southeast of Seddon and 50 km north- west of Kaikoura. Neighboring towns on Highway Parikawa are in the north and Waipapa Bay in the southwest. A road into the hinterland leading to a settlement Silver Springs. Clarence is located west of the mouth of the Clarence River to its floodplain.

In the area settled before the 12th century members of the people of Waitaha, they were displaced by the coming of the North Island Kati mamoe in the 16th century, these were in turn defeated by the Ngai Tahu in the 17th century and moved to the south.

The present town was built around a 1862 ferry landing furnished with accommodation facilities.

The victims of the shipwreck of the April 12, 1886 in the mouth of the Clarence River that ran aground Taiaroa are buried behind a church in Clarence in a mass grave. Of the 48 people on board, only 14 were rescued.

The railway main line Main North Line has a breakpoint in Clarence.
