Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southwest of Alabama, is in the west about 40 miles from the Mississippi, located in the south about 60 miles from Florida and has an area of ​​3244 square kilometers, of which 37 square kilometers of water surfaces. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Marengo County, Wilcox County, Monroe County, Baldwin County, Washington County and Choctaw County.

History

Clarke County was formed on December 10, 1812 from parts of Washington County. It was named after John Clark ( also Clarke) from Georgia, a General and Governor of Georgia. The first was the county seat Clarksville, in 1831 this was then Grove Hill.
