Clarke County (Iowa)

The Clarke County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 9,286 inhabitants and a population density of 8.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Osceola.

Geography

The County is located in southern Iowa, is located in the south about 40 miles from Missouri and has an area of 1,118 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

1900-1990 2000-2010

The Clarke County was designated as free on January 13, 1846 Originalcounty from - but in reality populated by Indians - formed territory. The County was named after James Clarke (1812-1850), the last Governor of Iowa - Territory ( 1845-1846 ).

The first white settlers in this area were 1846, the Mormons, away on their way to Salt Lake City in Utah, about 10 miles from Osceola, spent the winter. The first permanent settlers were probably Roberst Jamison and John Kyte. As of 1851 it is the settlement began on a large scale. The first lawyer was P. J. Goss, who for 30 years sat down here before he moved to Kansas.

The first courthouse was completed in 1854 and served as such until 1883, when it was destroyed by a storm. The next courthouse, this time built of stone, was completed in 1892. The third and still used today courthouse was put into operation in 1956. The Hawkeye - mill north of Osceola was the first mill in the county. The next mill was steam-powered and a combination of grain mill and sawmill.
