Clarksville is a municipality ( Town) in the south of the U.S. state of Virginia. The village is located almost entirely in Mecklenburg County and had 1139 inhabitants at the 2010 census.
Geography
Clarksville is located on the western portion of the John H. Kerr reservoir. The town bills itself as the only location beside a lake town of Virginia (Virginia 's Only Lakeside Town ). The predominant part of the municipality with the historic center is located on the southwestern shore of here almost a mile wide lake, a small part on a small peninsula on the opposite shore liegenen. Before the emergence of the reservoir Clarksville was at the confluence of Dan and Roanoke River. Their original course follows today the border of the adjoining Halifax County. This includes a short section of the road bridge, which connects the two community areas for Halifax and not like the rest of Clarksville for Mecklenburg County.
South of Clarksville leads past the ring road of U.S. Highway 58, during a run by Virginia Southern Railroad freight train passes through Clarksville and further north crosses the Kerr Lake.
History
The area of present-day Clarksville was originally inhabited by Occaneechee Indians. These were sold in 1676 by the British and settled the area by Europeans. In 1818, Clarksville was - named after its founder, Clarke Royster - the first town in the Mecklenburg County the status of a Town. In the 19th century the city was a center for trade and processing of tobacco. With the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in the early 1950s to Clarksville transformed from an agricultural community into a tourist.
Tourism
The historic center of Clarksville was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, another attraction is the adjacent Occoneechee State Park. However, the main attraction is the John H. Kerr Lake, the largest lake in Virginia, dar. Popular activities include swimming, sailing, water skiing and fishing. On the third weekend in July in Clarksville will take the Virginia Lake Festival, which is attended by up to 100,000 people.
