Classical World Chess Championship 2000
The World Chess Championship 2000 was a duel in which the reigning "classical" World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov lost his title to Vladimir Kramnik. The event took place in London.
Prehistory
It was Kasparov's third title defense after he had broken away from the world chess federation FIDE. Previously, he had won against Viswanathan Anand in 1993 against Nigel Short and 1995. Alexei Shirov Originally had qualified for a title fight against Kasparov. After it failed to attract sponsors for this competition, Kasparov himself chose his former pupil Vladimir Kramnik as enemies. With an Elo rating of 2849, Kasparov was considered a clear favorite against Kramnik ( 2770 ).
Organization and rules
The race was scheduled for 16 games. In the event of a tie, Kasparov should retain his title. The prize fund amounted to 2 million U.S. dollars.
Course
The match began on October 8, 2000 and ended on 2 November with a win Kramnik. It was noteworthy that Kasparov could not win a single game. Kramnik turned black with the successful defense of Berlin, found no remedy for the Kasparov.
