Claude Chalhoub

Claude Chalhoub ( born 1974 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese musician.

Claude Chalhoub grew up with 10 siblings in a musical family in the Christian quarter of Beirut. He began playing the violin at the age of eight years. First, he could be taught at the Lebanese Conservatory, where he first came consequently mainly with Arabic music in touch. Soon, however, the operation of the conservatory could no longer be maintained due to the Lebanese civil war and Chalhoub was forced to continue his studies autodidact. Despite these difficult conditions, these efforts were crowned with success of such that he received a scholarship from the Royal College of Music at the age of 18 years. Through a chamber concert by the producer Michael Brook was aware of him and produced with Chalhoub its first album, which was released in 2001.

In his work as a composer Chalhoub combines elements of Arabic, classical and Indian music. In 1999, Daniel Barenboim Chalhoub as concertmaster in which was founded by him and Edward Said, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.

In 2003, the Orient meets Occident Chalhoub dedicated project and performed at the WOMAD Festival, and the Duisburg Traumzeitfestival.

For his published in the spring of 2008 CD " sofa " Chalhoub worked with musicians at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.

Meanwhile, he has returned as a lecturer to the conservatory to Beirut.
